Yane Marques wins historical medal for Brazil in the modern pentathlon

This Sunday (12.08), Yane Marques from Brazil won the bronze medal in the women's modern pentathlon in the London Olympic Games, the first in the country's history at the Games. The sport is made up of five sports: fencing, swimming, equestrian, shooting and running. Beneficiary of the Athlete Grant Programme of the Ministry of Sport, overall, Yane scored 5,340 points. The gold medal went to Laura Asadauskaite from Lithuania (5,408 points) and the silver to Samantha Murray from Great Britain (5,356). With the result, she guaranteed Brazil?s 17th medal in London, closing the country's participation in the competition.

Third in the world ranking of the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) - best result of a South American athlete in the history of the sport -, Yane, twenty-eight years of age, was born in Afogados de Ingazeira (state of Pernambuco) and lives in Recife currently. She is a member of the Brazilian Modern Pentathlon Confederation in Pernambuco Salesiano/Powerade and of the Army Sports Commission of Rio de Janeiro (CDE - state of Rio de Janeiro), where she holds the rank of Third Sergeant.  

Career
The athlete from Brazil?s northeast region is considered the country?s biggest name in modern pentathlon of all times. A swimmer, she was invited to become part of the pentathlon Pernambuco state team in 2003. From then on, her career has taken consecutive and progressive leaps. In the first Pan American Games she took part in, Rio 2007, she won a surprise gold medal for Brazil. The title guaranteed her participation in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, where she placed 18th.

After winning the Pan American three times, and the South American Championship five times, the pentathlete from the state of Pernambuco was invited by the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) to join the Time Brasil (Brazil team), group of Brazilian athletes considered to be the best by the Committee.

In the pre-Olympic season, Yane took part in three of the four stages of the World Cup, in the final of the tournament, where she won the bronze in May in China, as well as the World Championship and the French Championship, where she was crowned champion in July. She also took part in a ten day training camp, to pay special attention to her fencing n Portland, Oregon state, United States.

Reward
In the 2011 World Military Games, she helped her country reach its best finish at an edition of the Games. She managed a podium finish in every event she competed in, winning three medals: gold in the teams event, silver in the women?s individual event, as well as bronze in the mixed relay. At the end of 2011, she won her seventh consecutive Brazil Olympic Award for Modern Pentathlon (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011).

In her nine years a pentathlete, Yane has won a gold in the Pan American in Rio (2007), silver in Guadalajara (2011), finished as runner-up at the World Cup Final (2009), also finished as runner-up  at the World Military Games (2011), two medals at the Military World Cup - a gold (2007) and a silver (2007) -, three times Pan American champion (2007, 2009 and 2010), a NORCECA championship (2009), six South American medals - five-time winner (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009) and a silver (2007) -, in addition to her achievement this year.
