This Wednesday (08.08), Athlete Grant beneficiary of the Ministry of Sport Adriana Araújo won the bronze medal in women's boxing in the 60kg category. The Brazilian lost the semi-final fight against Russian Sofya Ochigava 17-11. The thirty-one year old from the state of Bahia is the first Brazilian medallist in women's boxing in the year when the sport makes its debut in the Olympic Games.

With the victory, the Russian will fight for the Olympic gold against Irish fighter Katie Taylor. In Olympic boxing rules, there is no third place fight, thus, those who lose in the semi-final take home the bronze.

"It was not everything I wanted. I wanted to be Olympic champion, but I?m honoured to have won this medal for Brazil", said the athlete after the fight.

In the quarter-final, the Brazilian boxer beat Maroccan fighter Mahjouba Oubtil 16-12. The medal won by Adriana breaks a period of 44 years in which Brazil did not win any Olympic medals in boxing.

Beneficiary of the PETROBRAS Sport & Citizenship Programme, the boxer qualified for the London Olympic Games on the 15th of May during the Women?s Boxing World Championship in Qinhuangdao in China. Three hundred and forty-one athletes from 77 countries took part in the competition.
