Grant holder Arthur Zanetti wins first Brazilian gold in gymnastics

For the first time in the history of the Olympic Games Brazil won a gold medal in artistic gymnastics.  This Monday (06.08), twenty-two year old Arthur Zanetti, beneficiary of the Athlete Grant Programme of the Ministry of Sport, won the men?s rings final, scoring 15.900 points.  The victory took place at the North Greenwich Arena, the venue for the gymnastics events at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

The gymnast from Sao Caetano do Sul, town in the state of Sao Paulo, had placed fourth in the qualification on the 28th of July, scoring 15.616 points. During the interval between qualification and the final, Coach Marcos Goto talked about how to stay focused.  "We had already established our goals before coming here. So, we're working in an unperturbed manner, adjusting the final details for the final event. You do not lose focus when you set a goal." In the qualification, Arthur got the best result in execution, 9.116, but did not do so well in difficulty.

In the Olympic final, Zanetti beat favourite Chen Yibing from China, gold medallist in the Beijing Games and who scored 15.800 points in the final today, leaving him with the silver. Italian gymnast Matteo Morandi ended up with the bronze scoring 15.733 points.
