Esquiva Florentino wins another medal for Brazilian boxing in London

Hours after his colleague from Bahia Adriana Araújo guaranteed at least a bronze medal in women?s boxing, Esquiva Falcão Florentino, a boxer from the state of Espírito Santo - beneficiary of the Ministry of Sport?s Athlete Grant Programme since 2009 - also secured at least a bronze medal this Monday (06.08) in the 75kg category in the Olympic Games in London.

Son of boxer Adegard Câmara Florentino, more known as the Touro Moreno (Dark Bull), Esquiva, who is 22 beat Hungarian boxer Zoltan Harcsa 14-10 and has secured Brazil?s second medal in men?s boxing in the history of the Games.  If he gets through the semi-final, he may win a silver or gold medal - in Olympic boxing rules, there is no third place fight, thus, those who lose in the semi-final take home the bronze. With today?s victories, Brazil has recorded their best campaign in the sport.

When celebrating his victory, Esquiva did a T with his arms in honour of his dad, 75, who earned himself the nickname of Touro Moreno (Dark Bull) in the 60s. Before the Olympic medal, Esquiva?s main results were third place in the 2011 World Championship; bronze in the 2010 Medellin South American Games; runner-up in the 2010 Olympic Cup; first place in the 2010 Brazilian Championship; and runner-up in the 2007 Pan American Championship.  He secured his qualification for London with the bronze medal won at the Boxing World Championship in Baku, in Azerbaijan in October last year.

Brother
In his debut fight on the 2nd of August, the Brazilian beat Soltan Migitinov from Azerbaijan. Beneficiary of the PETROBRAS Sport & Citizenship Programme, Esquiva comes from a family of fighters.  His older brother, Yamaguchi Falcão, is also competing for a medal, in the 81kg category.

Also a beneficiary of the Athlete Grant, Yamaguchi has a difficult fight against Cuban Julio la Cruz Peraza for the quarter-finals next Wednesday (08.08). Another two of their brothers are also boxers: Tomas Edson Falcão Florentino and Estivan Falcão Florentino.

Estivan - who was named after boxing legend Cuban Teófilo Stevenson, three-time Olympic champion - is 15 and fights in the 56kg category.   Recently, the boy won the Brazilian Cadet Championship, representing the state of Espírito Santo.

Interestingly, in Portuguese, Esquiva actually means to dodge, which is a boxing move, used by a boxer to escape from an adversary's punch.
