PROFILE: Judo gold medallist has been a beneficiary of the Ministry of Sport since 2006

Sarah Menezes, 22 years of age from the state of Piauí, has ensured some unprecedented achievements for Brazil at the London Olympic Games. She is the first woman in the country to win a gold medal in judo, and on the first day of official competition, a result the country had never achieved before.

Sarah has been a beneficiary of the Athlete Grant Programme of the Ministry of Sport since 20006, when she started with a national level grant.   In the following year she was promoted to an international level grant, which she remained at until 2008. From then on, the grant evolved to the Olympic level, following the development of the athlete's career, who was the winner of the Brazil Olympic Award for the best Brazilian athlete in 2009.

After the first years as a beneficiary of the programme, Sarah?s good results led to individual support, which began to pay for her air fares so she could take part in competitions - a very different reality from when she was not a beneficiary of the Athlete Grant Programme and had to ask her mum for bus money.

In an interview given to the Ministry of Sport?s portal at the end of 2010, she already pointed out the importance of the federal government programme: "The Athlete Grant Programme is the most important support I have for training. We, the athletes, are always trying to improve and overcome challenges. The Athlete Grant Programme has been helping me a lot in my sport life".

Achievements
Debut in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, part of Brazil?s delegation with 13 judokas.   At the time, the only female medal came from Ketleyn Quadros, who brought home a bronze.

In addition to the gold in the 48kg in London, she has also had good results in her career. Junior World Champion in 2008 in Amsterdam, Holland; two time World Champion in 2009 in Paris, France; gold medal in the 2009 season in the World Cup in Madrid (Spain) and Lisbon (Portugal), winning all her fights with an Ippon; silver medal in the 2012 World Judo Championship in Paris; bronze in the 2010 World Judo Championship in Tokyo, Japan; fifth in the 2009 Senior World Championship in Amsterdam; and fourth in the Grand Slam in Tokyo in 2009.
